George Frank Bridges was born in 1922,(Wisbech Q1-1922 3B:887), son of Frank Charles Copeland and May Eliza BRIDGES (née SALMON), later of Soham.

At "Stanleigh", Brook Street, Soham in the 1939 register were his father Frank C [25-11-1896] L.N.E.R.signalman; his mother May E [8-1-1898]; brother George F [3-1-1922] apprentice butcher; brother Dennis [5-10-1925].

His father died in White Lodge Hospital, Newmarket on June 2nd, 1944. He was the signalman who sounded the alarm when the ammunition train caught fire at Soham and subsequently exploded. Frank of his injuries. see here





The 5th battalion, The Buffs were part of the 36th Infantry Brigade, 78th Division.
The Buffs came into the picture around Bronte, with the advance to Randazzo, nine miles to the north. They started their attack towards Maletto with two companies on the morning of 9th August, but encountered considerable defensive opposition. An evening patrol sent out by the Buffs on the 9th "ran into accurate artillery fire and lost 10 men killed and wounded............".
